Huge shoutout to Vadim from Plugg Electric! We just finished our basement, and he did an incredible job. Plugg Electric (Olec was the technician) did an excellent job fixing the electrical wiring on a few kitchen appliances that were not properly installed when we renovated the kitchen. The appliances were not up to code & could have caused an electrical fire. They also did all the electrical for a new mini-split air conditioning unit. Work was completed efficiently & professionally. Very reasonably priced. Vadim Paliy & Olec were a pleasure to work with & I would not hesitate to recommend them.
Information About Commercial Electrical Services
Commercial electrical work can range from diagnosing a recurring circuit problem to wiring an entire tenant improvement project. Before work begins, an electrician should understand how the space is used, what equipment needs power, and what is already installed. Plugg Electric can evaluate panels, circuits, wiring, and electrical loads to determine what work is appropriate for the property and planned business use.
Commercial Electrical Repairs and Troubleshooting
Electrical problems can interrupt operations and sometimes indicate a larger issue within a circuit or electrical system. Troubleshooting focuses on identifying the source before recommending repairs.
Commercial electrical work can include:
- Troubleshoot circuit breakers and recurring power problems
- Repair commercial wiring and electrical connections
- Diagnose overloaded circuits and electrical equipment problems
- Correct electrical safety and code issues
- Repair interior, exterior, and security lighting
- Evaluate panels and electrical distribution equipment
Repeated breaker trips, overheating, unexplained power loss, and other recurring problems should be investigated rather than treated as normal operating issues.
Wiring and Electrical System Upgrades
Adding equipment or changing how a commercial space is used can also change its electrical requirements. Existing electrical capacity should be evaluated before new loads are connected.
A commercial electrician can:
- Install dedicated circuits for business equipment
- Upgrade commercial electrical panels and distribution equipment
- Install wiring for new equipment and machinery
- Work with three-phase electrical systems
- Upgrade electrical capacity when required
- Install commercial EV charging equipment
Older Baltimore commercial properties may have been renovated several times for different businesses. Evaluating previous electrical work helps determine what can remain and what should be updated for the new use.
Tenant Improvements, Lighting and Renovations
Electrical planning is an important part of preparing a commercial space for a new tenant or remodeling an existing business. Planning early helps ensure lighting, equipment, outlets, and circuits are in the right locations before finishes are completed.
Commercial installations can include:
- Wire tenant build-outs and commercial renovations
- Upgrade office and retail electrical systems
- Install LED lighting and lighting retrofits
- Install exterior, security, and parking lot lighting
- Complete electrical work for restaurants and warehouses
- Update electrical systems in multifamily properties
Baltimore businesses operate in buildings that vary widely in age, layout, and previous use. A tenant moving into an older storefront may have very different electrical needs from a warehouse adding equipment or an office renovating its interior. Professional commercial electrical work starts by evaluating those needs along with the existing system. Plugg Electric can identify project requirements, explain the electrical work involved, and address applicable Baltimore permitting and inspection requirements as part of the project.

FAQs - Common Electrical Questions About Your Business
Electrical work for a tenant build-out depends on how the new business will use the space and whether the existing electrical system can support those needs. A space previously occupied by another type of business may require significant changes.
A commercial build-out can involve:
- New outlets and dedicated circuits
- Lighting and lighting controls
- Wiring for business equipment
- Panel or electrical capacity changes
- Emergency, exterior, or security lighting
- Electrical code corrections
Planning the electrical layout early helps coordinate circuits, equipment, and lighting with the rest of the renovation instead of making changes after walls and finishes are complete.
Yes, a commercial electrician can evaluate whether the existing electrical system can support new business equipment and determine whether additional circuits, panel changes, or increased electrical capacity are needed.
The evaluation may consider:
- Equipment voltage and amperage requirements
- Existing electrical loads
- Available panel capacity
- Single-phase or three-phase power requirements
- Dedicated circuit requirements
- Future equipment plans
The equipment specifications should be reviewed before electrical work is planned. This helps avoid installing circuits or making service changes based on assumptions about the equipment's power requirements.
Businesses can reduce overloaded circuit problems by matching electrical loads to circuits that have been properly designed for the equipment being used. Repeated breaker trips are a sign that the cause should be investigated.
An electrician may evaluate:
- Equipment sharing the affected circuit
- Circuit and breaker capacity
- Existing commercial wiring
- Large or continuous electrical loads
- Need for dedicated equipment circuits
- Available panel capacity
Simply installing a larger breaker is not an appropriate solution unless the wiring and entire circuit are designed for that amperage. Troubleshooting can determine whether loads need to be redistributed or new circuits are required.
A commercial electrical panel may need replacement when it is damaged, has insufficient capacity or space, or can no longer safely support the electrical needs of the property.
Reasons for an evaluation include:
- Corrosion or physical damage
- Signs of overheating
- Recurring breaker problems
- Limited space for additional circuits
- Planned installation of larger electrical loads
- Major renovations or changes in building use
Replacement should be based on the condition and requirements of the electrical system rather than the panel's age alone. An electrician can determine whether repair, modification, or replacement is appropriate.
There is not one inspection schedule that is appropriate for every commercial property. How often the electrical system should be evaluated depends on the building, equipment, electrical loads, operating conditions, and any problems that develop.
An inspection can be particularly useful when:
- Moving into an existing commercial space
- Renovating or changing the property's use
- Adding major electrical equipment
- Experiencing repeated electrical problems
- Finding signs of overheating or damage
- Planning changes to panels or electrical capacity
Regular attention to developing problems can help businesses address electrical issues before they lead to larger repairs or unexpected interruptions.
Commercial electrical work in Baltimore may require permits and inspections depending on the type and scope of the project. These requirements should be determined during project planning rather than after work has started.
Projects that may involve permitting considerations include:
- Commercial panel or service changes
- New electrical circuits and wiring
- Tenant improvements
- Major renovations
- Electrical work associated with a change in use
- Multifamily electrical projects
Baltimore's permitting system includes a Commercial and Multifamily Combo Permit category for applicable projects. Working with a properly licensed Maryland electrical contractor helps ensure permitting and inspection requirements are considered when planning the electrical work.
