Plugg Electric (Olec was the technician) did an excellent job fixing the electrical wiring on a few kitchen appliances that were not properly installed when we renovated the kitchen. The appliances were not up to code & could have caused an electrical fire. They also did all the electrical for a new mini-split air conditioning unit. Work was completed efficiently & professionally. Very reasonably priced. Vadim Paliy & Olec were a pleasure to work with & I would not hesitate to recommend them.
Information About Residential Electrical Services
Residential electrical work starts with understanding the problem or the goal of the project. For repairs, an electrician can troubleshoot the affected circuit and identify the cause rather than simply replacing a breaker, outlet, or switch. For installations and remodeling, the existing panel, circuits, wiring, and electrical capacity may need to be evaluated before new equipment is added.
Electrical Troubleshooting and Repairs
Electrical problems often provide warning signs before they become more serious. Finding the source of the problem helps determine whether a component needs repair or whether there is a larger issue with the circuit.
Residential electrical repairs can include:
- Troubleshoot frequently tripping circuit breakers
- Diagnose flickering or dimming lights
- Repair outlets or switches that have stopped working
- Investigate warm outlets or signs of overheating
- Restore power to outlets, lights, or individual rooms
- Correct electrical wiring and safety problems
Burning smells, unusual heat, sparking, or repeated breaker trips should not be ignored. These symptoms can indicate an electrical problem that should be professionally evaluated.
Wiring, Circuits and Electrical Safety Upgrades
Older homes may have fewer circuits than today's households need. New appliances, electronics, HVAC equipment, and other electrical loads can place additional demands on systems that were installed decades ago.
An electrician can:
- Install dedicated circuits for appliances and equipment
- Upgrade GFCI and AFCI protection where appropriate
- Repair or replace outdated or damaged wiring
- Update grounding and bonding
- Install whole-home surge protection
- Correct electrical code and safety issues
Older wiring does not automatically mean an entire home needs rewiring. The type, condition, modifications, and current electrical needs should be evaluated before deciding how much work is necessary.
Electrical Work for Remodeling and Home Improvements
Remodeling is a good time to evaluate wiring and circuits that may otherwise be difficult to access. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and other renovated spaces can also require additional electrical capacity.
Residential electrical installation can include:
- Add wiring and circuits during remodeling
- Install outlets and switches
- Install indoor and outdoor lighting
- Wire ceiling fans and fixtures
- Add circuits for kitchen and household appliances
- Install smoke and carbon monoxide detector wiring
Baltimore's rowhouses and older homes can make residential electrical work more involved because wiring may run through finished walls and tight spaces, and previous renovations may have changed the original electrical system. A licensed electrician can evaluate what is already in place before recommending repairs or upgrades. Homeowners can expect Plugg Electric to identify the electrical issue or project requirements, explain the work involved, and complete the appropriate installation or repair with attention to safety.

FAQs - Ask Your Local Electrician
A circuit breaker that repeatedly trips is usually responding to an overload or another electrical problem that should be identified instead of repeatedly resetting the breaker.
Possible causes include:
- Too many devices operating on one circuit
- A short circuit or wiring problem
- A problem with an appliance or other connected equipment
- A damaged or failing breaker
- Another fault within the circuit
A larger breaker should not simply be installed to stop the tripping. Breaker size needs to match the wiring and circuit. If the problem keeps happening, electrical troubleshooting can determine why the breaker is operating and what needs to be corrected.
Flickering lights can be caused by something as simple as a loose bulb, but repeated or widespread flickering can also point to an electrical connection, circuit, or service problem.
Pay attention to whether the flickering:
- Happens with only one fixture
- Affects several lights on the same circuit
- Occurs when an appliance starts
- Affects multiple areas of the house
- Is accompanied by buzzing, heat, or other unusual symptoms
These details can help an electrician narrow down the cause. Persistent flickering should be evaluated rather than assumed to be a problem with the light fixture itself.
Several outlets can lose power together because outlets in the same area may share a circuit or be affected by the same GFCI device, breaker, or wiring problem.
Possible causes include:
- A tripped circuit breaker
- A tripped GFCI receptacle
- A loose or damaged electrical connection
- A failed outlet affecting other outlets on the circuit
- A wiring problem
Check the electrical panel and accessible GFCI outlets first. If resetting them does not restore power, or they immediately trip again, an electrician can troubleshoot the circuit to find the underlying problem.
The age of a home can be a reason to have its wiring evaluated, but age alone does not determine whether the electrical system needs replacement. The type and condition of the wiring and changes made during previous renovations are also important.
An electrician may look for:
- Older or deteriorated wiring
- Improper electrical modifications
- Limited circuits for current electrical use
- Grounding problems
- Damaged outlets, switches, or connections
- Evidence of overheating or other electrical defects
This can be particularly useful in older Baltimore homes that have been remodeled or expanded over the years. An inspection can help determine which parts of the electrical system actually need attention.
An older home does not automatically need complete rewiring. The extent of the work depends on the type and condition of the existing wiring, previous electrical modifications, and how well the system supports the home's current needs.
An electrician can evaluate:
- Existing wiring materials and condition
- Grounding
- Circuit capacity
- Previous additions or modifications
- Electrical safety concerns
- Planned renovations or new equipment
Some homes may need targeted repairs or new circuits, while others may require more extensive updates. Evaluating the existing system first helps avoid assuming that a full rewire is necessary when a smaller scope of work may address the problem.
A remodel is a good opportunity to evaluate electrical needs because walls or other finished areas may already be open and the way a room will be used is changing.
Depending on the project, homeowners may consider:
- Additional outlets and switches
- Dedicated appliance circuits
- Updated lighting and fixture locations
- GFCI or AFCI protection where appropriate
- New wiring for changed room layouts
- Additional electrical capacity for new equipment
Kitchen, bathroom, and basement renovations can significantly change how electricity is used in a space. Planning the electrical work early can help ensure outlets, lighting, appliances, and circuits are accounted for before finishes are installed.
